Los Barrios lies in the Campo de Gibraltar, in the province of Cádiz, a few kilometres inland from the Bay of Algeciras. The old town sits on higher ground, its streets climbing and turning in the manner of many Andalusian towns. From above, it forms a compact, irregular cluster with newer neighbourhoods spreading below.
The municipality reaches down to the bay at Palmones, where the river of the same name meets the sea through a small estuary and marshland. Industrial areas and ports occupy parts of the coast nearby. Inland, the land rises into the hills of Los Alcornocales Natural Park, one of the largest cork-oak forests in Europe.
