Seto lies in the hills north-east of Nagoya, in Aichi Prefecture. The Seto River runs through the centre, and the older streets follow it along a narrow valley. Around this core, the land rises in wooded hills. Roads climb and wind up to residential areas and to the quarries that have supplied the town's clay for centuries.
Seto is one of the oldest and best-known pottery towns in Japan, and its kilns have operated for many centuries. The town's name gave Japanese the word setomono, now used for ceramics in general. Part of the 2005 World Expo was also held in the Seto area, and pottery remains central to local life today.
