Taounate is the capital of a province in the foothills of the Rif, north of Fes. The town is built on hilly ground, and its streets have to work with the slope. Some roads curve along the contours, while others climb more steeply between terraces of houses. From above, the town looks irregular and layered, completely unlike a plains grid.
The countryside around it is largely agricultural, with olive groves and small plots covering the hills, crossed by winding rural roads. Beyond the town lies the valley of the Ouergha river, which is dammed downstream to form one of Morocco's largest reservoirs.
