Apac is a district town in the Lango sub-region of northern Uganda, set on flat, low ground north of Lake Kyoga. On a map the town is modest and legible: a handful of main roads crossing near the centre, a loose grid of streets around the market and administrative buildings, and homesteads scattered outward along tracks that fade gradually into farmland.
The landscape around it is shaped by water. Swamps, seasonal streams and the lakes of the Kyoga basin lie within reach to the south, and roads tend to follow drier ground between them. This gives the outer parts of the map a gently irregular character, with lines bending around low wetland areas rather than running perfectly straight.
Apac is a small place, and its map is correspondingly spare, which is part of its appeal.
