Apopa lies just north of San Salvador and is part of the capital's metropolitan area. On a map it is a closely built town with a traditional centre around its main square and church, and newer residential districts spreading out along the roads that lead toward the capital and further north.
The terrain shapes much of the layout. Streams and ravines cut through the surrounding land, so neighbourhoods tend to spread along ridges and flatter ground, separated by narrow green gaps. To the southwest the San Salvador volcano rises over the valley, one reason the landscape around the city is so uneven.
