Ashington, in Northumberland, grew rapidly in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries around its coal mines, and was often described as the largest mining village in the world. The town's layout still reflects that period. Rows of terraced houses were built in straight, parallel lines for the miners and their families, and on a map they create one of the most distinctive street patterns in northern England.

Those long terraces, running side by side like ruled lines on a page, form the heart of the drawing. Around them sit later estates with curving streets and cul-de-sacs, and to the south the River Wansbeck winds east towards the North Sea. To the north-east, the former Woodhorn Colliery is now a museum, next to the lake and paths of a country park.

Ashington is known well beyond Northumberland for its footballers, including Jackie Milburn and the brothers Jack and Bobby Charlton. It is also known for the Pitmen Painters, a group of miners who became celebrated artists.
