Auron sits on a broad terrace high above the Tinée valley in the Alpes-Maritimes, part of the commune of Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée. From above, the village forms a compact cluster of streets on open, gently tilted ground, which is unusual in a region of steep, narrow valleys. The deep cut of the valley runs below it, and the Tinée road follows the river north toward the high passes.

Behind the village, lift lines and pistes climb in long straight strokes toward the ridges, then split into separate sectors. The Mediterranean coast around Nice is only a drive of about an hour and a half away, so this is one of the southernmost major ski areas in the Alps. On a map, that nearness shows as a steady line of switchbacks running down to the sea.

An Auron map poster shows the resort as it really is: a small, sheltered settlement set on a sunlit plateau, with the mountain opening out around it.
