Bārāmati is in the eastern part of Pune district in Maharashtra, on the banks of the Karha River. The surrounding plain is dry by nature but heavily farmed thanks to irrigation. On a map, the town has a dense, older centre near the river, planned residential and institutional areas beyond it, and roads that run straight out across flat farmland.
The area is known for agriculture, especially sugarcane, and for its cooperative sugar factories, dairies and agricultural institutions. Bārāmati has grown steadily into an educational and commercial centre for the region, with colleges and research campuses around the town. The newer districts have a more orderly layout than the old market streets by the river.
