Barentu Map Poster
Barentu is the capital of the Gash-Barka region, in the western lowlands of Eritrea. This is a very different landscape from the highland plateau around Asmara. The land is lower, hotter and more open, with hills and plains cut by seasonal rivers that flow only after the rains.
On the map, the town spreads across its site in loose blocks and clusters. Main roads connect it to other towns in the region and to the highlands to the east. Much of the surrounding area is marked by dry watercourses, which trace pale lines across the land between the settlements. The region is home to several of Eritrea's communities, including the Kunama.
