Barnes sits in south-west London, on the south bank of the Thames, where the river makes a large bend. On a map the water nearly surrounds the district on three sides, giving it a clear, rounded outline. Hammersmith Bridge crosses to the north, and a railway bridge crosses near Chiswick.
Inside the bend, the map is unusually green for London. Barnes Common spreads across the middle, and to the north the London Wetland Centre occupies former reservoirs, now a pattern of lakes, ponds and paths. The village centre, with its high street and pond, sits between them, while the long straight road of Castelnau leads north toward Hammersmith.
