Barus is on the west coast of North Sumatra, facing the Indian Ocean. On a map it is a shoreline town. Streets run parallel to the coast, a river mouth breaks the beach, and houses and gardens spread inland toward rising, wooded ground. The coastline itself makes a long, gently curving edge that anchors the whole composition.
The place has a very long history as a port. For centuries Barus was known across the Indian Ocean world for camphor and benzoin, aromatic resins from the Sumatran forests, and the name appears in early foreign records of the trade. Old tomb complexes on the hills nearby are linked with the early arrival of Islam in the region.
