Basford lies north-west of central Nottingham, in the valley of the River Leen. Its street pattern shows the district's past as an industrial suburb. Rows of terraced houses run in long parallel lines, and among them sit larger plots where mills, works and a brewery once stood. The river and the railway corridors run north to south and give the district a clear spine.
Today the Nottingham Express Transit tram runs through Basford on its way between the city and Hucknall, following an old rail alignment. Newer housing and retail sites have replaced some of the old industrial land, and on the map their curving cul-de-sacs stand out from the straight Victorian terraces. Parks and allotments break up the built-up area into smaller parts.
