Basildon was designated one of Britain's post-war new towns in 1949, built to house families moving out of London. The plan joined several existing settlements, including Pitsea, Laindon and Vange, into a single town. On a map this history is easy to read: separate neighbourhoods of curving roads and cul-de-sacs, linked by fast distributor roads and roundabouts, with a planned town centre near the middle.

The town sits between two major routes into Essex, the A127 to the north and the A13 to the south, and its road network is shaped around them. Green space is woven throughout, from playing fields between estates to the wooded slopes of the Langdon Hills in the southwest. To the south, towards Pitsea, the land flattens into marshes and creeks leading down to the Thames estuary, where Wat Tyler Country Park sits.
