Batabo lies in the countryside west of Aleppo, in the rolling limestone uplands of north-western Syria. From above, it looks like many towns in this region: a compact centre of closely packed buildings, with lanes branching out and getting looser as they reach the surrounding farmland. Field boundaries and tracks spread out from the edges in a patchwork that follows the gentle shape of the ground.
The land around the town is farmed, and orchards and cultivated plots make up much of the map beyond the built-up area. Roads link Batabo to neighbouring villages and to the larger towns of the district, and they cross the plain in long, slightly wandering lines. The overall picture is of a settlement that grew from its surroundings rather than to a plan.
