Bathgate lies in West Lothian, roughly midway between Edinburgh and Glasgow. From above, the older centre sits on rising ground with irregular streets, while later housing estates spread out in curving layouts. The Bathgate Hills rise to the north, and the M8 motorway runs just south of town.
The town has an industrial history linked to coal and shale oil. James Young, the chemist who pioneered paraffin oil production, worked in the area, and Sir James Young Simpson, known for introducing chloroform as an anaesthetic, was born here. The reopened Airdrie–Bathgate railway line now links the town west toward Glasgow.
