Beaumont sits high in the San Gorgonio Pass, the gap between the San Bernardino and San Jacinto mountains in Riverside County. On a map the town is split into two textures: an older core of straight blocks near the railway and the interstate, and much larger areas of newer housing, laid out in loops, crescents and cul-de-sacs across the open ground.
Interstate 10 and State Route 60 meet here, so the city marks a point where traffic between the Los Angeles basin and the desert funnels through. Beaumont was once known for cherry orchards, and its long-running Cherry Festival still refers back to that agricultural period, though most of the former farmland is now residential.
