From above, Będzin reads as a town that has grown into its neighbours. The Czarna Przemsza river runs through it, and to the south and east the street pattern merges almost seamlessly with Sosnowiec and Dąbrowa Górnicza. Only the older core, gathered on the slope beneath the castle hill, keeps the tighter, irregular lanes of a medieval market town before the grid of later industrial housing takes over.

The castle itself is the fixed point of any map. Its keep and walls stand on a rise that once watched over the borderland between Silesia and Lesser Poland, and the fortress was rebuilt in stone under Casimir the Great in the fourteenth century. Before the Second World War, Będzin was home to a large Jewish community, a history now traced through memorials and a restored prayer house in the old town.
