Brodowski is a town in the north of São Paulo state, a short distance from Ribeirão Preto. On a map it forms a neat, compact grid of streets on gently rolling ground, with a central square and church at its heart and a railway line that historically shaped its growth. Beyond the last blocks, fields and plantations stretch in every direction.
The town is known above all as the birthplace of Candido Portinari, one of Brazil's most important painters, whose murals include War and Peace at the United Nations headquarters in New York. His childhood home is now the Casa de Portinari museum, where visitors can see murals he painted on its walls and in a small family chapel.
