Cambridge Map Poster
Cambridge lies on the River Cam in the flat country of East Anglia, north of London. From above, the historic centre is small and dense, a cluster of college buildings arranged around enclosed courts. On their western side the river runs past the Backs, a strip of lawns and gardens behind several colleges. Around the centre, a ring of open commons and meadows keeps green space close to the old streets.
The University of Cambridge dates from 1209, and its colleges still own and shape much of the centre. King's College Chapel stands beside the river, and the wooden Mathematical Bridge links two parts of Queens' College. Punts move slowly along the Cam between the colleges, and Parker's Piece, a large square common, is often linked to early written rules of football.
A Cambridge map poster shows how much of the city is courtyard, lawn and water. The streets are short and irregular, fitted between college walls, while the Cam and its commons draw long, soft shapes across the frame. The newer suburbs and the railway to the south-east complete a picture that is both academic and domestic.

The colleges are built around enclosed courts. From above they appear as a pattern of open squares set into the dense fabric, which gives the centre its distinctive cellular look.
Commons and meadows
Parker's Piece, Midsummer Common, Jesus Green and the meadows along the river form a ring of open land. It keeps green space close to the historic core.
