Canton is a large township in western Wayne County, about 25 miles west of downtown Detroit. Seen from above, it is organised almost entirely by the mile-road grid that covers much of southeastern Michigan: long, straight section-line roads at one-mile intervals, with curving subdivision streets, cul-de-sacs and shopping centres filling each square in between.
Interstate 275 runs along the township's eastern side, and Ford Road forms a major commercial corridor across its northern part. The Lower Rouge River winds through the township, leaving an irregular green thread of parkland and woods across the otherwise regular plan. Through the late twentieth century, farmland here was steadily replaced by housing, which is why the street pattern looks so consistent from square to square.
