Carmópolis is a town in the state of Sergipe in northeastern Brazil, not far inland from the Atlantic coast. The town itself is small and compact, with a few streets around a central square. What makes the map unusual is the surrounding landscape, which is threaded with the access roads of an oil field.
The Carmópolis oil field was discovered in the 1960s and became one of the most significant onshore fields in Brazil. Around the town, the land is marked by a network of tracks and clearings linking the wells, set among sugarcane and pasture typical of the region.
