Catriel lies in the northwest of Río Negro province in Argentina, on the south bank of the Colorado River, which here forms the boundary with La Pampa. From above, the town is a regular grid of streets beside the river's green corridor. Beyond that corridor stretches the dry, open Patagonian steppe, crossed by straight roads and service tracks.
Oil and gas production has shaped Catriel's growth, and the surrounding land is marked by wells, pipelines and access roads that appear on the map as fine straight lines on empty ground. The Colorado's floodplain adds a band of vegetation and irrigated plots between the town and the water, with a bridge linking to the La Pampa bank.
