Catu is a municipality in the state of Bahia, in northeastern Brazil, inland to the north of Salvador. The town grew in gently rolling country, and from above its streets follow the terrain rather than a strict plan, bending along small valleys and climbing low hills. Around the urban area the map opens into farmland, patches of vegetation and rural roads.
The area belongs to the Recôncavo Basin, one of Brazil's historic onshore oil and gas regions, and that work has long sat alongside farming in the local economy. Catu is a working town rather than a resort, and its map shows it: practical roads, a compact centre and neighbourhoods that have grown outward along the main routes.
