Charentsavan was built in the years after the Second World War as an industrial town for the Kotayk region, and it carries the logic of Soviet planning in its streets. Wide avenues run in straight lines, apartment blocks stand in regular groups, and factory districts sit apart from the housing. The town takes its name from Yeghishe Charents, one of the most important Armenian poets of the twentieth century.

The setting is upland Armenia, on uneven ground between Yerevan and the town of Hrazdan, with mountains visible on the horizon. That terrain is felt in the map: where the ground rises or falls, a few streets bend to follow it, while the core keeps a disciplined, rectilinear plan. Roads leave the town toward the capital and toward the highlands around Lake Sevan.
