Chipiona sits on the Atlantic edge of the province of Cádiz, close to where the Guadalquivir opens into the ocean. From above, the town is a tight, low cluster of streets pressed against the shoreline. On its northern and southern sides long bands of sand run away along the coast, and the plain behind is divided into vineyard and farm plots. It is a small place, and the grain of its streets is easy to follow on paper.

The best-known landmark is the lighthouse, often described as the tallest in Spain. It stands near the water at the western end of town, and on a map its position explains why it was built there, on a low headland facing both the river mouth and the open Atlantic. Close to the shore, stone tidal fish traps called corrales curve into the shallows. In detailed renderings they show up as faint arcs just beyond the sand.

A Chipiona map poster shows a town defined almost entirely by its coast. The dense centre, the straighter streets of later expansion and the thin roads leading inland toward Sanlúcar and Rota all fit into one frame. Chipiona is also known for its moscatel wine and as the hometown of the singer Rocío Jurado, so the map carries more associations than its size would suggest.
