Comiso stands in the province of Ragusa in southeastern Sicily, on the lower slopes of the Hyblaean Mountains, looking out over the flat, cultivated plain of the Ippari toward Vittoria. From above, the old town appears as a compact knot of streets on rising ground, with newer, more regular districts spreading out toward the lower land.
Like much of the Val di Noto, the town was largely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693, and its churches and palaces carry the baroque style of that reconstruction. Comiso is also the birthplace of the writer Gesualdo Bufalino, and its former military airbase, the focus of large peace protests in the 1980s, now serves as a civilian airport.
A Comiso map poster shows these layers clearly: the tight grain of the historic centre, the orderly expansion around it and the long straight runway set apart on the plain.
