Como sits where the south-western arm of Lake Como comes to an end, and from above the town reads as a small, dense rectangle between water and hills. The historic centre still follows the chequerboard of Novum Comum, the Roman colony laid out here, and stretches of medieval wall frame it on three sides. Beyond them the streets loosen and climb into the valley and up the surrounding slopes.

The lakefront is the sharpest line on the map. Promenades curve north along both shores past villas and gardens, while the water opens as a pale wedge between mountains. A funicular runs from the waterfront up to Brunate, drawn as a straight stroke across the looping hillside roads. Como is also the birthplace of Alessandro Volta, and a temple dedicated to him stands on the western shore.

A Como map poster works because of the contrast between order and terrain. The tight blocks of the old town, the broad open lake and the fine lanes that follow the contours of the hills all sit in one frame without crowding each other. In black and white the composition becomes almost architectural, and it holds its own on a wall far from Lombardy.
