Cristalina sits on the high plateau of Goiás, south-east of Brasília, in the heart of Brazil's cerrado. The town takes its name from the quartz crystals found in the area, and the crystal and gemstone trade remains part of its identity. From above, the urban area is a largely regular grid of streets set on open, gently undulating ground.
What makes the surrounding landscape extraordinary is agriculture. The municipality is known for one of the largest concentrations of centre-pivot irrigation in Brazil, and seen from the air the countryside is covered with circular fields, each drawn by a rotating sprinkler arm, with straight farm roads running between them.
