Cuemba is in Bié province, on the high central plateau of Angola, in the eastern part of the province. The land here is broad and open, with grassland, woodland and river valleys. The town is small, and on the map its streets look like a light cluster set into a very large landscape.
The Benguela Railway, which runs across Angola from the Atlantic port of Lobito towards the eastern border, passes through the area and has a stop at Cuemba. Its long, steady line crosses the plateau with few curves. Roads join the town from nearby settlements, and around the edges tracks and paths lead out to farms and villages.
A Cuemba map poster is mostly space. There is a modest group of streets, the confident stroke of the railway and quiet land all around. The print is spare and calm, and it suits a place where the scale of the landscape is part of daily life.
