Cuilo lies in north-eastern Angola, in the Lunda region of high plateau, gallery forest and long river valleys draining north toward the Congo basin. The town is modest in size. On the map it appears as a compact cluster of streets and plots set within a wide, lightly settled landscape that stretches in every direction.
The Lunda provinces are best known for their diamond deposits, which have shaped roads and settlement across the region for generations. Around towns like Cuilo, the pattern from above is one of unpaved tracks, scattered homesteads and watercourses cutting shallow lines through the plateau. It looks nothing like the dense grid of a large city.
