Desio is in the province of Monza and Brianza, north of Milan, in one of the most densely built parts of Italy. From above, it is hard to tell where it ends and neighbouring towns begin, because houses, workshops and roads continue without a break. The old centre is still visible as a knot of streets around the main church. Beyond it, the pattern becomes a close mesh of residential and industrial blocks.
Desio was the birthplace of Achille Ratti, who became Pope Pius XI in 1922. The town's best-known green space is the park of Villa Tittoni Traversi, a historic villa with landscaped grounds that shows up on the map as a large, calm shape among the tight blocks. Rail lines and fast roads run north toward Lake Como and the Alps, and south to Milan.
