Dunstable grew up where two ancient routes met: Watling Street, the Roman road now followed by the A5, and the prehistoric Icknield Way. Seen from above, that crossing is still the organising point of the town. The main streets run out from it in four directions, and the older plots line up along them before giving way to later housing estates.
To the south-west the map changes character. The built-up area stops against Dunstable Downs, a chalk escarpment of open grassland at the edge of the Chilterns. The shift from dense streets to empty contours is one of the clearest edges you will find on an English town plan, and in monochrome it reads as a quiet, pale margin.
To the east Dunstable merges almost seamlessly with Luton, so the street pattern carries on without a visible boundary.
