Eden, in Rockingham County, lies where the Smith River flows into the Dan, just south of the Virginia border. The map reflects its unusual origin: rather than a single centre, there are several older street grids, each tied to a former mill village, linked by longer roads across wooded, hilly ground. The two rivers curve through the town and decide where streets could run.
The city was formed in 1967 when the towns of Leaksville, Spray and Draper merged. For much of the twentieth century textile mills were the main employers, and the old mill districts remain visible in the street pattern. In black and white, those separate cores, the river bends and the roads linking them create a map with more variety than most towns of its size.
