Escada lies in the Zona da Mata of Pernambuco, the humid belt of hills south-west of Recife that has been planted with sugarcane since colonial times. From above, the town looks like a small cluster of streets pressed into a valley floor. Rolling ground surrounds it on every side, and roads have to follow the slopes and the river bottoms because they cannot run straight across them.

The name is Portuguese for staircase, which suits a place defined by changes in level. On the map, the dense centre gives way to looser neighbourhoods that climb the nearby rises. Streets curve and branch where the terrain allows, so the town takes on an irregular outline rather than a regular grid. The river running past the town adds one long, meandering line to the composition.

An Escada map poster shows a town shaped by its landscape instead of by a planner's ruler. In black and white, the pattern is easy to follow: tightly knit blocks near the core, then lanes thinning out towards open fields. Past the edges, a few lines lead off into the countryside, tracing the old routes between the town, the surrounding estates and the neighbouring municipalities of the region.
