Esplanada is a municipality in the north-east of Bahia, in the band of country between the Atlantic coast and the drier interior. On a map the town is compact, with a central grid of streets around a main square and church, and roads leading out toward neighbouring towns and the coastal region. Farmland and scattered vegetation fill the space around it.
Like many towns in this part of Bahia, Esplanada serves as a local centre for the surrounding rural area, with its market, shops and services concentrated near the middle of town. The land beyond is gently rolling, crossed by rural roads and small water courses, with farms and smaller communities spread across it.
