Eugene sits at the south end of Oregon's Willamette Valley, and the Willamette River runs through its northern side on a long diagonal. Most of the city is a rectilinear grid, but the river breaks it. Along the banks, riverside paths and green spaces such as Alton Baker Park form a wide corridor between Eugene and neighbouring Springfield.
The University of Oregon occupies a large campus east of downtown. Nearby, Hayward Field has given the city its reputation as TrackTown USA. Bill Bowerman coached here, and the story of Nike began with him and Phil Knight. Skinner Butte rises just north of downtown, and Spencer Butte marks the southern skyline with forested slopes above the residential streets.

To the south, streets start to curve as they climb into the hills. In a minimalist style the composition is balanced and airy, much like a city known for bikes, trees and open space.
