Flagstaff sits at around 7,000 feet on the Colorado Plateau in northern Arizona, surrounded by one of the largest ponderosa pine forests in North America. From above the city stretches east to west along a single corridor where the BNSF railway and historic Route 66 run side by side, with neighbourhoods reaching north and south into forest and volcanic hills.
Downtown is a small, tidy grid next to the tracks, and just south of it the campus of Northern Arizona University spreads out in larger blocks, quads and sports fields. To the north the San Francisco Peaks rise above the city, with Humphreys Peak, the highest point in Arizona, forming the backdrop to almost every view from town.
Flagstaff is also a place of the night sky. Pluto was discovered at Lowell Observatory on Mars Hill in 1930, and in 2001 the city became the world's first International Dark Sky City. Mars Hill
West of downtown, the wooded rise of Mars Hill holds Lowell Observatory, where Clyde Tombaugh found Pluto in 1930; winding roads mark its slopes.
