Freudenberg sits in the hills of the Siegerland in the south of North Rhine-Westphalia, where valleys fold into one another and roads follow the streams. On a map the town reads as a scatter of settlements linked by curving routes, with the historic core a small, unusually regular block set against a slope. Forest covers much of the surrounding ground, so built areas appear as pale islands in a darker field.

The core is the Alter Flecken, the old town whose black-and-white half-timbered houses stand in near-parallel rows under dark slate roofs. It was rebuilt in this orderly pattern after a fire in the seventeenth century, and the view of it from the park on the slope opposite has become one of the best-known images of German timber-frame architecture.

That contrast between strict rows and loose hill roads gives a Freudenberg map poster its character. The old town is compact enough to read clearly at small print sizes, while the valleys, junctions and outlying villages fill the rest of the sheet with gentle curves. It works well centred on the Flecken or zoomed out to show the town within its wooded setting.
