Gotha lies in Thuringia, between Erfurt and Eisenach on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest. Its most striking feature from above is Schloss Friedenstein, a large early baroque palace on a hill above the old town, surrounded by extensive landscaped gardens that form a green block on the map.
The town was the seat of the dukes of Saxe-Gotha, and its name travelled widely through the Almanach de Gotha, the directory of European nobility published here for many years. In 1875, the congress that united Germany's early socialist movement met in Gotha and gave the Gotha Programme its name.
A Gotha map poster shows a compact medieval core below the palace hill, followed by later residential quarters spreading outward. A tram line runs from town into the Thuringian Forest, and the rail line cuts along the southern side. It is a balanced, detailed map with a clear focal point.
