Hadejia lies on the flat plains of northern Nigeria, beside the river of the same name. On a map the town is a dense core of irregular streets and compound walls, with newer roads extending outward in straighter lines. Beyond the built-up area the land opens into farmland and the broad, low floodplain of the river.
The town is the seat of the Hadejia Emirate, one of the traditional emirates of the region, and the emir's palace remains a central landmark. Downstream, the Hadejia River feeds the Hadejia-Nguru wetlands, a seasonal floodplain that matters for farming, fishing and migratory birds. The cycle of wet and dry seasons shapes the countryside around the town.
