Halstenbek lies just beyond Hamburg's north-western city limit, in the Pinneberg district of Schleswig-Holstein. On the map it has none of the hard edges of a city. Low-rise residential streets, curving cul-de-sacs and scattered green plots merge into neighbouring towns, and the rail line to Hamburg runs through the middle.
The area is known as nursery country. For generations, tree and plant nurseries have filled the land around Halstenbek and Pinneberg, and from above this appears as a patchwork of long, narrow plots between the houses. These rectangles give the map an unusual texture, part suburb and part cultivated field.
