Heidelberg University is spread over both banks of the Neckar. The old town, where the historic faculties sit, is a long narrow strip between the river and the steep, wooded slopes of the Königstuhl, with the castle ruins above it. Across the water to the north-west, the Neuenheimer Feld campus spreads over flat ground in large blocks of clinics, institutes and sports fields.
Founded in 1386, it is the oldest university in present-day Germany. The Old University and the University Library stand in the centre of the Altstadt, close to the Hauptstraße, the long pedestrian street that runs the length of the old town. On the north bank, the Philosophenweg climbs along the slope opposite the castle, with the classic view back across the river.
A Heidelberg University map poster sets the tight, linear old town against the open layout of the science campus, joined by bridges across the Neckar. The river's broad curve, the forested hills on both sides and the narrow lanes of the Altstadt give the map a strong sense of place, even without the castle and rooftops.

The stone Karl Theodor Bridge crosses the Neckar from the old town to the north bank, one of several bridges that tie the two halves of the university together.
