Hereford lies in the west of England, close to the Welsh border, on the north bank of the River Wye. The map is built around a medieval centre of narrow streets and small squares, surrounded by an inner ring road that follows roughly the line of the old city walls. Outside the ring, residential streets spread toward farmland on every side.
The cathedral stands between the centre and the river. It holds the Mappa Mundi, a medieval map of the world drawn on a single sheet of vellum, and one of the best-surviving chained libraries. The surrounding county is known for orchards and cider, and for Hereford cattle, a breed now raised on several continents.
A Hereford map poster shows how closely the city is tied to the Wye. The river bends along the southern edge of the centre and is crossed by a medieval stone bridge and newer road bridges. On paper you can follow the ring road, the old streets inside it, and the meadows along the water.

Inner ring road
A ring road follows much of the old defensive line and wraps around the historic core. On the map it reads as a clear boundary between the medieval street pattern and the later suburbs.

The cathedral and its green close make an open space between the shopping streets and the river. It is the quietest patch of the centre and an easy place to start reading the map.
