Hvar is one of the longest islands in the Adriatic. It stretches east to west off the Dalmatian coast, south of Brač. For much of its length it is very narrow, little more than a limestone ridge between two coasts, and it widens towards the west. The shoreline is full of small coves and inlets, and there is a cluster of small islands, the Pakleni Islands, off its western end.
Hvar town sits in a bay near the western tip below a hilltop fortress, and its main square opens straight onto the harbour. On the north side, Stari Grad lies at the end of a long, narrow inlet. A Hvar map poster shows how a single main road follows the ridge along the island, with side roads dropping down to the bays.
Between Stari Grad and Jelsa lies the Stari Grad Plain. Greek colonists divided this land into regular plots in the 4th century BC, and the pattern is still in use today. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hvar is also known for its lavender fields and for being one of the sunniest places in Croatia.
