Iida lies in southern Nagano Prefecture, in the Ina Valley, where the Tenryū River runs between the Central Alps and the Southern Alps. From above, the city spreads across a series of river terraces that step down towards the valley floor. The old centre sits on a raised plateau, and farmland and villages extend up the side valleys.
After a large fire destroyed much of the centre in 1947, the city was rebuilt with wide firebreak streets. One of them was planted with apple trees by local schoolchildren. Iida is also known for its puppet theatre traditions and hosts an international puppetry festival each summer.
An Iida map poster shows a city shaped by mountain terrain. The regular post-war blocks fill the central terrace, roads follow the steps of the land down to the river, and the high ground on either side becomes open, almost empty space around the edges.
