Ingá sits in the agreste of Paraíba, the transitional belt between the humid coast and the dry sertão, roughly halfway between João Pessoa and Campina Grande. From above, the town is small and concentrated. A handful of main streets meet near the centre, and short residential blocks stop quickly where fields and scrub begin. There is no sprawl here, just a clearly bounded settlement in open country.

The town is best known for the Pedra do Ingá, a long rock outcrop in the riverbed outside town. It is covered in ancient carved symbols, called itacoatiaras, whose meaning is still debated. The site is protected as national heritage in Brazil and draws visitors and researchers from far beyond the state. On a map it is a single point by the water, but it is the reason many people know the name.
