Irving fills the land between Dallas and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, and its map changes character from one district to the next. Older neighbourhoods in the south follow a conventional grid. To the north, the Las Colinas development introduces curving boulevards, office towers and a man-made lake, and highways thread through the whole city, linking it to the wider metroplex.
Las Colinas is one of the most ambitious planned developments in Texas. At its centre are Lake Carolyn and the Mandalay Canal, which is lined with walkways. Nearby, the Mustangs of Las Colinas sculpture shows wild horses running across a plaza. On the eastern edge, the Elm Fork of the Trinity River winds through open floodplain.
