Itatinga is a municipality in the interior of São Paulo state, in the rolling uplands of the centre-west, not far from Botucatu. Like many towns in the region it was laid out on a regular plan. From above, the urban area looks like a neat block of squares with a central square near the middle and straight streets running out to the edge of town.
Beyond the grid the picture changes quickly. Rural roads leave town at angles, following ridgelines and property boundaries across open land. Forestry plantations and farmland cover much of the municipality, and small streams cut shallow valleys through it. The town ends abruptly against the fields, which gives the map a strong, clean outline.
