Jämsä covers a wide area of Central Finland where water and forest share the map almost equally. Long lakes fill the hollows between wooded ridges, and the roads follow the shorelines and cross narrow straits. Instead of a single town plan, the result is a string of settlements, each shaped by the water beside it. The main centre sits in a river valley that drains south toward Lake Päijänne.
Jämsänkoski, now part of the municipality, grew up around rapids and a paper mill, and its industrial buildings show as broad, blocky shapes along the river. Near the centre, the Himos hills rise high enough to hold one of Finland's best-known ski resorts. Its slopes and cottage roads draw fine, looping lines through the surrounding forest.
On paper, much of Jämsä is empty space: lake surfaces left blank, with shorelines drawn as crisp outlines. A Jämsä map poster makes the most of that restraint. River and mill
The Jämsänjoki river connects the central settlements to Päijänne. At Jämsänkoski, the mill adds large rectangular shapes along its banks, a reminder of the area's paper industry.
Himos hills
The ski area at Himos shows as a cluster of curving access roads and cabin lanes on higher ground, a distinctive knot of lines surrounded by forest.
