Jarrow lies on the south bank of the River Tyne, a few kilometres downstream from Newcastle and Gateshead. On a map the river dominates, its wide curve lined with quays, port land and the former tidal inlet of Jarrow Slake, now largely reclaimed. The town spreads south from the water in rows of terraced streets and later estates, laced with main roads heading to the Tyne Tunnel.
The place has two very different histories. In the seventh century the monastery of St Paul was founded here, and the Venerable Bede lived and wrote in the twin monastery of Wearmouth–Jarrow. Much later, Jarrow became a shipbuilding town around Palmer’s yard, and after its closure the Jarrow March of 1936 carried the town’s case for work all the way to London.
A Jarrow map poster captures both at once: the church and monastery site by the small River Don, the docks and quays along the Tyne, and the dense streets behind. It is a map with a strong sense of both early medieval and industrial history, drawn simply in black and white.
